Builder's Bio Robots' Bio Photos Links | It all started with the idea to build a lightweight robot. Then later it turned out to be a superheavyweight. In late 2001 "Sir Basher" (its original name) began to take form. Some small NPC motors and some Radioshack batteries and a few feet of angled steel. A few weeks later the spped controller went in a Vantec RDFR-23. Eventually we realize it is much too big for those small motors and batterries. Little did we know the motors were supposed to run to gears then to the wheels not directly. A couple months later we have a 2 NPC 64's and 2 large SLA's. How to fit it all in this lightweight frame? Cut it up and do half over again. Now we have a 142 pound heavyweight. The only way to make it lighter would be to use some Battlepacks. We thoguth about the cost and figured they were too much for the first bot. Not only in price but now we have a speed controler designed to push lightweights around not heavyweights. Now by this time we just missed the last Battlebots season and the bot was sitting in ou garage for awhile. Finally we find out Robolympics is coming and we get a chance to fight. In its first fight Tobor (its new name) was up against ShinSplitter with its Magmtor powered blade. It cut right into Tobor's armour and took out a battery and the kill switch. Later that day it was time to fight Shiva, a shell spinner, and we won by technical knockout. The next day brought Cyclonebot. Great another spinner but this time a full body spinner. This match went all the way to a judges decision. Tobor took one good hit flatening the front wedge but took out one of the large titanium blades on Cyclonebot. At the end of the match Cyclonebot wasn't spining and was in the corner for a little bit and looked slugish. Who would have thoguht 2 NPC-64's powered by a RDFR-23 on some SLA's could stop 2 Eteks with Battlepacks. Unfortunatly Cyclonebot won. So it is time to rebuild again. Some new SLA's with more amps and thicker diamond plate steel. Nothing too exciting but a cool looking paint job and some good bracing around everything. It turns out it is now 15 pounds overweight! So back to the shop some work with a torch and grinder now it is about 219.5 pounds. |
